Daughter of Smoke and Bone - Laini Taylor (Review)

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
(Daughter of Smoke and Bone #1)

Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil's supply of human teeth grown dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she's prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands"; she speaks many languages—not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she's about to find out.

When one of the strangers—beautiful, haunted Akiva—fixes his fire-colored eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

Karou is an art student, with blue hair who works for Brimstone, he raised her since she was little. Karou’s life is a mystery for people around her and in some way for her as well. Is through her drawings she can show that part of her, that secret world humans don’t know, because those creatures she draws… they are not fictional at all. When her life fills with mystery and unanswered questions and when strange things begin to happen, Karou knows is time to take a chance and start a journey she never imagined.
Daughter of Smoke and Bone tells us Karou´s story, her world, the chimaera and some mysteries that Karou will solve. The world building is amazing, the plot is complex and riveting and the story is unique, original and so well thought. I’m tired of wolves and vampires so it was very refreshing to finally read something so different and rich, about chimaera and angels. Also, the setting, I mean I have never been to Prague but it sounds just wonderful.
Page after page you want more… you NEED to know what´s gonna happen, what happened…. Everything!
The characters are nicely developed. Karou´s a very peculiar girl, she´s strong and determined. The other characters are very rich as well, like Zuzana, Brimstone…Akiva <3
What I liked more about the book was that Karou´s story, her world´s story and the romantic parte are all developed, so you can have action, love, and a paranormal story all in one. The twists are OMG and that ending…. Just….wow! You really end up dying to know what happens know and wondering why, oh why do we have to wait that long for DAYS OF BLOOD AND STARLIGHT to come out??
Daughter of Smoke and Bone is a gripping, out of this world electric story you MUST read.

Clarity - Kim Harrington (Review)

Clarity by Kim Harrington

When you can see things others can't, where do you look for the truth?
This paranormal murder mystery will have teens reading on the edge of their seats.
Clarity "Clare" Fern sees things. Things no one else can see. Things like stolen kisses and long-buried secrets. All she has to do is touch a certain object, and the visions come to her. It's a gift.
And a curse.
When a teenage girl is found murdered, Clare's ex-boyfriend wants her to help solve the case - but Clare is still furious at the cheating jerk. Then Clare's brother - who has supernatural gifts of his own - becomes the prime suspect, and Clare can no longer look away. Teaming up with Gabriel, the smoldering son of the new detective, Clare must venture into the depths of fear, revenge, and lust in order to track the killer. But will her sight fail her just when she needs it most

Clarity is the freak in town, no one speaks to her and they all stare. She has a very rare family, she´s kinda of a psychic, her brother talks to the dead and her mother also has supernatural powers. Clare only hangs out with Perri, her brother and a friend of his, and she tries to have a normal life. But after a murder in town, her life gets complicated and she ends up working with the police, trying to save her brother and working with the new detective´s son and her ex-boyfriend, Justin.
Clarity is very easy read, very short book that gives us something different, a mystery, a murder and a plot that really makes you doubt about who the real killer is. Is very fluid, the characters are ok and I really liked Clare. The writing style draws you into the book and the ending is good. I think is more a mystery book than a paranormal YA book but I feel there was little of everything here. It´s a great book for something light to read and it actually leaves you wanting to know more. Would read the next book? Sure, I think is worth it and I really hope it gets real good.

Strangers frighten her with warnings about the approaching Shadows. And although Elise has never had a boyfriend, she suddenly finds herself torn between two handsome but very different young men: Abe, the charming bad boy whose affect on her both seduces and frightens her, and the mysterious Harlin, who’s new to town but with whom Elise feels an urgent, elemental connection—almost as if they are soul mates.

Now Elise begins to question everything about her life. Why do these guys both want her so desperately? What are the Shadows? Why does the name Charlotte inspire a terrifying familiarity? And who is Elise, really?

Top Ten Books I Think Would Make Great Book Club Picks

1. The Little Prince by Antoine Saint-Exúpery. A classic, something you cna read any age, any time and that can have very different meanings for someone.
2. Harry Potter by JK Rowling. Well, yeah I so wouldnt mind reading it again. It would be great for controversy because it´s a very rich story, the whole background, the references Rowling used, the whole good vs evil thing and lots of more topics to discuss!
3. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Perfect to read in a book club before the movie comes out. You can talk about the whole dystopian/not so far world Katniss lives in, about the capitol and what the whole story represents.
4. Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. Is a great book, I think it would suit perfectly for a book club for teens, it can show them how we can affect other people´s lives.
5. The Maze Runner by James Dashner. Great book, dystopian story (yes, Im obssesed with dystopian books)it could be a great idea to discuss your theories about WICKED.
6. Any book by Jane Austen. Great discussion topics, they way they lived, the place the ladies had back then, the whole convinence marriage thing. Just great discussions.
7. Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. Is a strong book and I think a lot of people should read it and discuss it. Very serious topic that teenagers should be aware of.
8. Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson. Same as Speak, is a sometimes-hard-to-read book, but totally worth it.
9. Delirium by Lauren Oliver. Who wouldnt like to talk more about Lena and Lex?
10. The Cinderella Society by Kay Cassidy. Girl power all over!!! Perfect for a feminist or just girls book club!
